About the wines

We age our Pinot Noirs about a year and a half on lees in French oak barrels and lees stir for about 9 months. We rack the wine (move it out of the barrels they’ve been in for the last 9 months) into neutral barrels and let them rest and mature additional 9 or so before we blend  and bottle.

We have 2 very different palates, and therefore blend  2 Pinot Noir ‘cuvees’ that follow our  individual palates;  the ‘classical Oregon’ style is the Stewart Pinot Noir bottling  and the ‘new world’ style  is the Athena Pinot Noir bottling.

In addition, as vineyards offer their own unique characteristics, we bottle a variety of ‘Vineyard Designate’ Pinot Noirs separately each year. These wines are chosen because they uniquely and beautifully represent the qualities of the (grapes’) origin, and of our (winemakers’) craft.

TASTING NOTES FROM PAST VINTAGES

2003 Pinot Noirs

Wines are still developing. Expect balance in Mid-2008

2003 Athena Pinot Noir   [ Last tasted 11/10/07 ] - Drink or Hold

An intense wine for hedonistic Pinot Noir lovers!  Full-bodied and intense with spicy toast and lush, dark cherry fruit, this is a wine to drink now or age for 5-10 years.  The 2003 Athena reflects the power and depth of the Anderson Family, Cherry Grove, Momtazi, and Murto vineyards and the balance provided by the blend of Pommard and Dijon

clones used in the blend. 275 cases produced.

2003 Stewart Pinot Noir  [ Last tasted 5/1/07 ] - Hold ...OK, maybe drink

This wine is just starting to come into balance.  The gorgeous fruit is nicely matched by some hints of anise and graham. It's matching really well with grilled pork as of the last tasting. 125 cases produced.

2004 Pinot Noirs

Wines are approachable now, but the patient will be rewarded.

2004 Athena Pinot Noir   [ Last tasted 11/10/07 ] - Drink or Hold

The 2004 Athena Pinot Noir once again showcases the deep, rich side of Oregon Pinot Noir.  The dijon clone fruit from Anderson Family, Momtazi, Cherry Grove, and Justice vineyards produced a wonderful, balanced wine in 2004. 250 cases produced.

2004 Stewart Pinot Noir    [ Last tasted 11/10/07 ] - Drink or Hold

The 2004 Stewart Pinot Noir is a silky blockbuster!  Once again, this is an all Dundee Hills blend with Pommard

and Wadenswil fruit from Maresh, Stoller, and Anderson Family vineyards. 175 cases produced.

Northwest Palate - Recommended

2004 Stoller Vineyard     [ Last tasted 2/23/07 ] - Drink or Hold

Wow! This wine has some of the most beautiful aromatics of any I have tasted in the last year.  Cigar box, sandlewood, and anise sit on top of earthy, bright fruit. The attack on the palate is very dark and complex. Sexy fruit still dominates the mid-palate with luscious black raspberry and sour cherry.  The finish is out of this world!  If you still have more than one bottle in your cellar, treat yourself by opening a bottle.  I'm hording the rest of mine now.

2004 Shea Vineyard        [ Last tasted 11/10/07 ] - Drink or Hold

Dark black cherry, berry and orange peel at the core combine with hints of chocolate, spice, and a whiff of barnyard to produce an intense and complex wine.

2004 Momtazi Vineyard     [ Last tasted 5/3/07 ] - Drink or Hold

Dijon Clone 115 from Block C, high up in the biodynamically farmed Momtazi vineyard. Big cherry aromas wrap around notes of caramel and cedar. Notes of graham and rose petals accent the bright fruit in the midpalate. Silky tannins lengthen the long, bright finish. 50 cases produced.
